Feet are a complicated part of the body as there are numerous small bones which are joined collectively by a lot of ligaments and controlled by a lot of muscles. Furthermore we carry the bodyweight on the foot and subject it to so many pressures. To make it even worse we put the foot inside the unnatural environment of footwear. It is because of this that the career of podiatry exists since there is just so much which may go wrong with the feet and connected structures. Podiatric physicians use a wide range of different interventions to relieve problems of the foot and lower limb.
Foot orthoses are often used to treat the wide array of problems that can be wrong with the foot. The aim of foot supports are to improve alignment of the feet in the direction of a more corrected normal alignment or to lessen the strain in structures of the feet which are painful to enable them to heal. The foot orthotics do that via having different design attributes that are supposed to match the feet. A customized foot orthoses will do that. However, over the counter insoles can do this, usually by chance. They may or might not match the feet of the person using them whereas a custom made one will. There are various variations varied, for example the height of the arch and the amount of padding. There are even designs called the Cluffy Wedge.
