Garden Pond
A garden pond, though fairly expensive, will add style, elegance and a true nature feeling to your overall landscaping. There are several pond options available: a fish pond, a water garden, waterfall or fountain pond, and a “do-it-yourself” pond. Each type of pond will look beautiful and offer a different, fun twist to your yard.
A fish pond is one of the more enjoyable pond types; however they do require more maintenance and care than any other garden pond. Professional instillation is recommended for a fish pond to make sure your fish will survive. The best type of fish for garden ponds are: Koi, Comet Goldfish, Shubunkin, Sarasa Fan, and Rainbow dance fish. If you live in an area with birds of prey be sure to place a log or overhanging rock in the pond for the fish to hide under.
A water garden is one the cheapest types of garden pond. They don’t have to be big, but they can be as large as you would like. All you need is a plant liner and a whole in the ground and you can plant various plants that will literally grow right out of the water. Water garden kits are found at department stores in the home and garden section.
A waterfall/fountain pond is a pond with a waterfall or fountain attached to it. In most cases these can be installed after the pond is built, if you decide you want one a while after you install your pond. A do-it-yourself garden pond is both a difficult and rewarding project. There are plenty of books, websites, and people to call, to give good instructions and tips to build your own pond; the only question is whether you want to spend the time to do it.
